4 Common Questions About CEREC Crowns

May 6, 2024

Dental crown in milling machineCEREC technology has transformed the process of getting dental crowns. You can receive a high-quality restoration during your lunch break. There’s no need for a temporary crown or a second appointment. However, it’s normal to have a few questions before you’re ready to invest in a same-day dental crown. Here are the answers to 4 of the most common questions about CEREC crowns.

1. Why Don’t I Need a Temporary Crown?

The traditional method of getting a dental crown will require a temporary restoration. Your tooth is reshaped and an impression is taken to create your crown. It can take the dental lab a couple of weeks, so your dentist must place a temporary restoration while you wait.

CEREC crowns are milled in-office. As a result, you don’t need a temporary crown. Instead, after your tooth has been prepped, your dentist will take a digital impression of your mouth, which works along with CAD/CAM technology. Your dentist will specify the color, size, and shape for your restoration before the information is sent to an in-office milling machine. In about 1 hour, your crown will be ready to be bonded to your tooth.

2. Are CEREC Crowns Durable?

Although CEREC crowns are created in only an hour, it doesn’t compromise their quality or durability. Ceramic material is used to ensure your restoration looks like a real tooth. It will be strong enough to withstand biting and chewing. Your crown can last for 5 to 15 years before needing to be replaced.

3. Are CEREC Crowns Expensive?

Every situation differs, but CEREC crowns can cost about the same as traditional restorations. If your crown is medically necessary, you can use your dental insurance to lower the amount you will pay out-of-pocket. After reaching your annual deductible, your insurance may pay 50% to 80% of the expenses. Your dentist will work on your behalf with your insurance company to maximize your annual benefits. If there are any out-of-pocket costs, you can make monthly installments through a third-party financing company, based on your credit approval.

4. Are CEREC Crowns Safe?

CEREC crowns are biocompatible because they don’t contain any metals. There’s no risk of allergic reactions. They support your general wellness using all-ceramic materials.

Your dentist will be happy to answer any other questions you have during your consultation. They’ll provide you with the information you need to make the best choice for your dental health.
