What Are Dental Lasers?
A laser is a highly concentrated beam of light. There are many different kinds of lasers used in dentistry. At our practice, we use the Gemini EVO™ Laser. This is a diode laser that is used to alter soft tissues. It converts electrical energy into laser light, and it can be used for a variety of different purposes.
Types of Laser Dental Treatments
Dental lasers can be used for a wide range of different treatments from cosmetic dentistry to treating infection. Here are some of the different services that utilize our dental laser.
Frenectomies
Some people are born with a very short or thick frenum. This can restrict the movement of certain oral tissues. When this occurs, it is called a lip or tongue tie. Fortunately, this is usually easy to address with a dental laser. We use it to perform a frenectomy – a quick surgery where we loosen the frenum to allow for additional mobility in the mouth.
Photobiomodulation Treatment for TMJ
Some patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) can find relief with photobiomodulation. This non-invasive treatment uses laser treatment to promote tissue healing in the body.
Gingival Troughing for Crown Impressions
Gingival troughing is a process that is completed to prepare the gingival tissues before the impressions of teeth are made. These impressions are necessary when the tooth is being prepared to get a dental crown.
Periodontal Treatment
Gum disease is an infection of the soft tissue surrounding the teeth. It can be devastating for oral health. To help our patients recover from this condition, we might use our dental laser to remove infected tissue. Simultaneously, it can kill harmful bacteria, making it easier for the mouth to heal.
Gum Recontouring
If you have excess gum tissue or an uneven gumline, our dental laser may be able to help you achieve a more proportionate smile. It can gently trim specific areas of the gumline, creating a healthy frame for your teeth.
Ulcers & Canker Sore Treatment
A canker sore, also known as an “aphthous ulcer,” is a small, painful sore that appears on the inside of the mouth. While some home remedies can be helpful for treating cancer sores, dental laser treatment is newer and more effective at getting rid of them.
The Benefits of Laser Dentistry
Laser dentistry comes along with numerous different benefits. Here are some of the most prominent ones that patients can look forward to:
- Quick Recovery: Patients usually recover from laser procedures more quickly than procedures performed with traditional dental instruments. This is also a reduced need for sutures.
- Minimal Bleeding: The dental laser can cauterize tissue as it moves.
- More Comfortable: Lasers can reduce or eliminate the need for anesthetics and sedation.
- Faster Treatment: We can complete services as quickly as possible.
